   These are some steps you can take now to improve your chances of getting help with rent or utility bills. Every program is different, but doing the steps below can help speed things up or make you eligible for more options.

   Step 1: Gather Required Documents

   Most programs will ask for the following:

   ·         Photo ID (State ID, Driver’s License, Passport)

   ·         Proof of income (pay stubs, SSI, unemployment letter, etc.)

   ·         Lease agreement or rental receipt

   ·         Past-due rent or utility bills (electric, gas, water, etc.)

   ·         Disconnection/shut-off notice (if you have one) 

   Step 2: Make a List of Places to Apply

   Use the list of community resources we provided. Start by calling or visiting 2–3 programs that match your situation. Be ready to:

   ·         Ask about application requirements and deadlines

   ·         Schedule appointments or walk-in hours

   ·         Write down who you spoke with and when 

   Step 3: Apply to More Than One Program

   Some programs run out of funds quickly. Don’t wait for one answer — apply to several:

   ·         Churches or faith-based organizations

   ·         County or city emergency programs

   ·         Utility company assistance programs

   ·         Non-profits focused on eviction prevention

   Step 4: Follow Up on Your Applications

   Keep track of where you applied. Follow up within 3–5 days if you don’t hear back. Keep a notebook or phone log with:

    Step 5: Look Into Short-Term Income Options

   Some programs ask if you have any income, even temporarily:

    How much can eligible applicants expect to receive in assistance?

   Eligible households may receive up to $640 once per year. Additionally, applicants may receive up to $500 in supplemental benefits in applicable crisis situations.

    Community Action Agencies

   The Division of Community Assistance and Development contracts directly with Community Action Agencies and the Arizona Community Action Association. Some of these agencies subcontract with other community agencies within their service area to provide additional services.

   The Community Action Network is made up of public and private agencies that work to alleviate poverty and empower low-income families in communities throughout Arizona. Most of the agencies are Community Action Agencies (CAAs), created through the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. CAAs provide services to more than 150,000 people annually.

   To receive federal funding, the services are governed by the following statutory goals:

Short-Term Crisis Services

Short-Term Crisis Services (STCS) Program provides temporary assistance to low-income families experiencing an emergency need that cannot be met immediately by their own income, and resources to help stabilize an immediate financial crisis. A dependent child must live in the home.

The STCS Program provides emergency assistance with:

·         Preventing homelessness by helping with rent or mortgage payments

·         Emergency shelter

·         Utility payments and utility deposit assistance

·         Special needs related to maintaining or securing employment

·         Rental deposits

A crisis, according to the STCS program, may be defined as one of the following:

1.       A separation from the family that resulted from domestic violence where the applicant is unable to return home

2.       Loss of income

3.       An unforeseen event that makes it difficult to meet one’s expenses

4.       A situation that endangers the health and safety of the family

5.       Applicant must be able to explain and provide proof of emergency need for assistance.

 Eligibility: Who is eligible?

To qualify for STCS, the applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements:

·         A resident of Arizona at the time of application

·         Have a child under the age of 18 that meets US Citizenship or qualified legal resident criteria

·         Have a total gross household income not exceeding 125% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.

·         For households with one or more seniors (60 or older) or persons with disability, the total gross household income cannot exceed 150%.

How often can someone receive assistance?

-          The availability of STCS assistance is not guaranteed. STCS eligibility is limited to once in a 12-month period.
